Coaching is a multi-faceted discipline that includes a wide range of skills, techniques and concepts to achieve specific goals. And while the right techniques can help you accomplish a lot, one element that’s often ignored or misunderstood in coaching is the need for emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, plays an important role when it comes to building strong client relationships, asking thoughtful questions, and guiding meaningful conversations. It’s what allows coaches to stay grounded, respond with care, and support change without judgment.

    Like any skill, EQ can be learned and developed. It takes awareness, feedback, and practice, but you can make great progress the more you work on it. 

    Here are a few ways to grow your emotional intelligence as a coach:

    • Practice reflection: After each session, take time to ask yourself what you noticed, felt, or reacted to.
    • Ask for feedback: Mentor coaching and peer sessions are a great way to hear how your presence lands with others.
    • Focus on active listening: Notice when your mind wants to jump in, and bring it back to the client.
    • Join a coach training program: Choose a program that helps you practice presence, empathy, and self-awareness in real coaching conversations.

    Engage in continuing education: Explore EQ-focused workshops or intensive coaching programs that give you new tools and insight.
